Our ex-National Trust UK carpenter par excellence, Red, has spent the past two weeks breathing new life into the downstairs sash windows (4) and French doors (2) - and it's been fascinating watching a master at work. Any wood (western red cedar and kauri in the main) in need of replacing has been matched with same, new door treads and replacement horizontal & vertical window pane bars meticulously shaped by hand, a small patch of dry rot rectified and all sash cords replaced. By the end of this week, we'll be moving on to the upstairs (7 windows). Red has even saved all of the convict-made nails which have been replaced during the course of his work - things of beauty!
